Columbia County Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1993, is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. To date, our volunteers have built safe, affordable housing for 18 families. We make home ownership possible for lower-income working families through no-interest mortgages. To encourage re-use and recycling as well as generate revenue for building projects, Habitat operates the ReStore, adjacent to our office on Route 66, just north of 9H in Hudson, NY.

Each year, hundreds of people from all walks of life join Habitat for Humanity in building simple, decent homes to serve local working families in need of affordable housing. Ranging in age from high school students to retirees, these people—volunteering individually and in groups—give of their time and effort to make Columbia County a more open-hearted place in which to live.

Working elbow to elbow with the future homeowners (known as partner families), construction volunteers frame walls, install siding, paint trim, lay insulation, and spread topsoil. Meanwhile, office, committee, and ReStore volunteers perform tasks that are less physically demanding but no less important.

Ask anyone you know who has volunteered with Habitat. The work is so rewarding that it becomes addictive. It’s also incredibly easy to get started. Just fill out the Volunteer Information Form (which can be downloaded here) and email it to We’ll get back to you promptly and register you for either a construction day or one of our other volunteer opportunities.

No previous experience or special skill is required. Our staff of professional contractors and volunteer crew leaders will teach you everything you need to know on site so that, by the end of the day, you’ll have an authentic feeling of accomplishment.

Volunteering as a Group
Because one of the most rewarding aspects of Habitat work is the camaraderie, people often volunteer as a member of a group. We’re happy to arrange special work days for businesses, congregations, civic organizations, and even groups of friends and neighbors. All are welcome.

Volunteering for a Committee
Committees are a vital part of our organization. They manage the finances, raise the necessary funds, choose the build sites, select and work with the partner families, supervise the professional contractors, oversee the ReStore, and organize the volunteers. Committee members attend regular (usually monthly) meetings, interact with likeminded people, and work to make positive change in our community. For more information about the activities of specific committees, please contact our executive director.
